In any event, I don't think there's much to be gained
annoying the faithful by co-opting their holidays.

And Easter wasn't co-opted by Christians?

Well, they spliced their stuff onto the existing
spring fertility festivals ...

The first Sunday after the first full moon after the Spring equinox? No,
that doesn't sound even remotely pagan! ;-)

Of course it is. Then again, being a new religion amongst many,
likely the early xians felt they'd do better piggybacking on
established traditions.

Now maybe a petition should be circulated towards the
end of making Darwins birthday a national holiday.

I'm sure there are other anniversaries far more worthy of elevation to
holiday status. VE Day for instance.

I don't know about that. Darwin caused a MAJOR shift in the way
we looked at the natural world and ourselves. At least as worthy
as Newton.

More useful would be two new holidays: Daylight Savings Days to give
people a chance to sleep in and adjust their body clocks.

Those are called "weekends". Not MY fault if you get even less
sleep on the weekends.

As for the whole concept of DST ... it should be tarred and
feathered and run out of town on a rail. The time is the time.
Now if a business owner wants to start at 8am instead of 9am
during the summer months then that's their choice.

I'm not sure about the alleged "energy savings" either. What's
the diff whether you go home to a dark house and turn on the
lights or whether you wake up to a dark house and turn on
the lights ? It's just a matter of what end you're burning
your candle at, so to speak.
