So I've got this old(ish) mac laptop with a shattered screen. (Yeah, I'm kinda tough on laptops.)
It's the guy who sneaks into students' dorm rooms and spills
things into their laptops while they are sleeping after a
late-night "study session". Now I know where he spends the summer.
It's a powerbook G4 and
is capable (had it a screen I could see anything on) of running some older software that my new mac won't deign to look at. I was thinking I'd get a nice big separate screen to go with the old mac, be able to use my old software, and also have it sitting in the livingroom as a household DVD player, and perhaps community access to the interwebs or something.
I've realized that all screens are not created equal - e.g., I can't go get one of those big screen tvs and just plug in my mac. But the guy at Radioshack said that PC screens won't work,
Ah, Radioshack. You've got questions? We've got answers. *Wrong*
answers, but answers nonetheless.
either (he said they didn't have anything in the store that would work with a mac). I wandered in to the mac store, but all the people who worked there were hanging out in the back behind a closed door, having a party or something.
They were counting iPods. Really. All iPods must be counted and
the numbers reported back to Apple Home Base. Since I know Apple
is much too hip to worry about mundane bean-counter type stuff,
I've surmised that iPods, when left uncounted for too long,
develop super powers of transmogrification or might reach some
critical mass or something dire like that. It's the *only*
rational explanation. I once stacked five 4GB Nanos next to a
laptop running Windows Vista, and it ran really slowly, as if
the very fabric of Time itself was being affected.
I'm usually pretty happy about that - I prefer to just look at stuff without a salesperson trying to 'help.' I looked around, but only saw one screen that wasn't also a computer. It was $900, which seemed like far too much for what amounts to little more than an extra play-toy.
Ahh, that was an Apple Cinema Display. Very nice, but pricey.
Is it true that I need a mac screen, and a PC screen won't work?
Are there nice-ish decent size screens out there for a lot less than $900?
No, there isn't any such thing as a "Mac screen" You can use a
computer monitor, or a LCD TV, with the caveat being you must
make the physical connection with cable and adapters, and there
might be resolutions that are better than others.
The current generation uses Mini DVI (Macbook) and DVI (Macbook
Pro). The iBook used Mini VGA, and I'm not sure what the
Powerbook G4 used. I think it's also DVI. The DVI connector is
about 2" long with a lot of pins including a cross or plus symbol
arrangement. If it has three rows of pins with a total of 15
pins, it's VGA. You can convert DVI to VGA with an adapter if you
need to.
I just bought an Asus 19" LCD display from Newegg for $129 after rebate. It has only has VGA, I would recommend VGA and DVI unless it's a real bargain.
