Online feud

Don't like to hog too many threads, but I've got my own "agony column"
issue on which I'd appreciate a bit of sniggler wisdom, given that you
folks may know a thing or two about this subject...
As some of you may know, I'm part of an internet society on British
roads called SABRE. We're quite unusual for an internet group in that
we're constituted along the lines of a traditional members' club, with
an AGM, elected officers, committee and so on. I was heavily involved
with the early development of SABRE but had to leave when I lost
regular internet access in 2004. In particular, I was one of the main
players in a project to collaborate on a book about the British road
network, which has been going since 2002.
When I returned earlier this year, I noticed that work on the book had
completely stopped. Having some time on my hands I offered to take
over the project for them. This offer was accepted and put to a vote
of the membership which was passed 8-1. (I had some procedural
objections to the vote at the time, but let that pass.)
However, it seems as though "Charlie Martin syndrome" may have kicked
in somewhere, because I started to realize after a while that some of
the newer members of the committee were objecting to my stewardship of
the project. Some of them didn't appear to want a book at all, others
appeared not to like the way I was handling it, and in one case the
objections appeared to extend to me personally.
Anyway, we had some fairly robust discussions on the admin boards
about this, which eventually led to one committee member stating:
"I will also make it clear that I dislike you, I dislike your handling
of situations, I dislike your constant love affair with making things
harder than they need be, I dislike your attitude. That is *my*
personal opinion and I am using *my* right to say it."
He also made comments about the book dying a "horrible horrible death"
and similar. I refused to follow this up on the boards and sent him a
(hopefully courteous) private message, to which he hasn't responded.
I haven't met this guy before, but he and I will both be attending one
of the regular SABRE gatherings in just over a week's time, and to be
honest I'm getting rather nervous. Is this just a bit of internet
bluster, or something more sinister?
Guy
