Sunday morning my wife and Eli (our 2 1/2 year old son) went out for awhile so I went out in the backyard to hide some plastic easter eggs (filled with jellybeans, chocolate, and three with a few quarters). That was about 10:00am. When they returned Eli went into the backyard and found one of the eggs (sitting on a batting T) and asked, "What's this?". I went about preparing supper for the guests that were to arrive later. About 1:00pm my mother and father in law, brother and sister and law, and two nieces arrived. We considered letting Eli and my nieces go out and "hunt" the easter eggs but decided to put it off until after we ate.
Around 1:00 or so I noticed that a plastic toy I had hidden one of the eggs under was knocked over but didn't pay much attention to it. A short while later my oldest niece went out in the backyard to play and was using another toy which had an plastic egg hidden on it and when she came back in didn't say anything about finding anything. About 2:00pm supper was almost ready and I was out on the back porch and noticed that the egg I had hidden in plain view in a hole in a log was missing.
I went out to investigate.
I found the wrapper for the missing egg on the log, and found two other locations that now seemed to be missing eggs that I had placed earlier.
We decided to send the kinds out to search for the eggs to find out how many seemed to be missing. It turned out that they couldn't find five of the 25 eggs that I had hidden. Other than the wrapper I found I the missing eggs were just gone. Who could have taken them?
After a bit of searching I found the remains of one plastic egg and one jellybean. The plastic eggs was chewed in half. Squirrels!!!
I don't know where the rest of the missing eggs ended up and I still don't know if they took any of the plastic eggs with the quarters in them. I've been considering staking out the local mini-mart to see if any squirrels come in trying to buy peanuts.
Back at the petting zoo, all the Easter eggs were skillfully hidden
by the staff so that the children would go searching for them and
find them. The rooster found one or two and became very upset. "Some-
one's been messing around with my hens," he declared. He promptly
went over and gave the pea*** a sound thrashing...
