in general i agree with you but there's this cute little LINUX BASED
tool out there called g4u which sucks up your hard drive block for block
and throws it at an ftp server. then you can reverse the process later.
it boots from a cd rom. really handy. used it to replace the HD in my
work laptop with one of a different size (bigger, of course, not
recommended to use this going to a smaller one).

incidentally i replaced a motherboard on a windows system (2k) and this
rendered the entire operating system completely unbootable. i tried
quite a few recommended hacks. the problem was that both the dead
motherboard and the replacement one required "F6" type HD controller
drivers, and even putting the new driver on the HDD before booting
didn't help poor confused win2k to find the boot disk (after it started
booting -- this is a very strange behaviour in my opinion).
