Evelyn - it sounds as if your Father's caregiver has a lot of common
sense -and that is a blessing for you and yours.
I remember that I mentioned once before - whether you had ever
considered (perhaps you had) getting a professional in on this situation
- perhaps a social worker, intimately familiar with the elderly. It is
not that they will have a magic formula - but a "detached' and trained
professional can perhaps better judge, and decide, and come up with
solutions which you perhaps did not realize, exist.
Seems to me that your Father's situation begs for placement in some sort
of facility - though know that is a heartbreak. but, really, if I were
you, I would try to get a professional in on this, and see what they
come up with; they know of more resources than you could possibly know.
and don't forget, it is possible that the helper who lives with your
Father, may have a vested interest in having him stay there, since, as
long a he does, she also has a home, so that, perhaps, I would not pay
too much attention to her report and advice.
It may break your heart to have to place your Father somewhere - and he
may do "badly' once there - but it seems to almost boil donw to the
question: "him or you??" your life or his??? He does NOT seem to be in
full possession of his senses - not all of them, and not all the time -
- so that living at home entails many unnecessary risks for him and
those around him
but then, you pehaps know all this, and might have considered it - I am
just thinking out loud. Hope you don' t mind. = = Olly
