Re: The Potato Famine

Have you ever wondered why the Irish were so dependant on potatoes?
They weren't always. At one time they had vast land holdings with lush
wheat fields and barns full of livestock. That is, until the English
stole their lands and forced them to live on rocky hillsides, suitable
for nothing but potatoes. English laws forbade them to buy, sell or
rent land, to sell their crops to anyone other than the English for
little profit, to marry anyone other than another Irish person, to
educate their children, and oh so many other laws, with severe
penalties, which made life unbearable for them.
So yes, many Irish existed mainly on potatoes, but not by choice. Many
of them left for American shores, my great grand parents were among
them.
I think I will go and bake a potato and slather it with butter and
sour cream.

Ah, the civilizing influence of the British, their high moral character, their great technical achievements. Did I mention that when the Roman left Britannia central heating and Roman Baths left and it was a very long time indeed before the Brits made a second rate stab at getting them back.
