And "no cigarettes" signs. There was a radio program called the Breakfast
Club and they used to do phony commercials for "No" brand cigarettes.

| I can't recall just how long it took for all rationing to end.
| I do remember with some surprise how rapidly I saw new merchandise
| coming back into some stores. I especially recall that in record time
| new washing machines began showing up in the stores.
|
| Manufacturers began building new cars again. They were released as
| 1946 models but they differed very little from the last new cars, the
| 1942 models. Simply resuming manufacturing the old model was the
| quickest way to get new ones out the factory door. The old dies and
| plans were no doubt in storage awaiting reuse when the time came. The
| actual newly designed cars started appearing in the 1947 models but
| very few of them. The 1947 Studebaker was one of the first. The
| first Fords that were not 1942 hash-over's were the 1949 models.
|
| There was a huge backlog of new car customers. One had to go to the
| dealership and put their name of the waiting list and when the car
| became available they were notified. The dealer would have one or two
| on hand as demo models for potential customers to see. I recall some
| new cars being delivered to the customer without the steel bumpers.
| Temporary bumpers made from wooden planks were put on the car and the
| customer would be notified to bring their car in when the regular
| steel bumpers came in.
|
| During the a war years cigarettes were in short supply. Many smokers
| bought simple cigarette rolling devices and rolled their own. When
| word got through to the neighbohoodr that the corner store had just
| received some cigarettes a line out the door would quickly form. How
| many remember the slogan "Lucky Strike Green Has Gone to War"?
