Jingles, that was dark and depressing, and though it holds some truth, it isn't all of it. The person who wrote that needs to go on Zoloft. :-)

THE BETRAYAL OF PROGRESS
As I lie in my bed scratching my itching papery skin, and shift endlessly trying to find a position that comforts my aching joints, I ponder upon life. What else is there for me to do? My sleep is frequently disturbed by a bladder no longer young and elastic, and an unbroken night is a luxury long since denied me. I am of little use to anyone. To my friends I am a listening post, a captive audience; to my family I am a duty, loved, but at times an inconvenience that interferes with their own lives; to my doctor, I am a challenge and I believe often a thing to be pitied. He advises me to be optimistic and maintain a philosophical attitude, but what is there to be optimistic about? How can I be philosophical when I can only reach the letter box with the aid of a stick and I must depend upon others for the so called necessities of life.
Nature is not a cruel mistress. As the ravages of time leave their mark upon face and body, she dims our eyesight so that we may not see them so clearly. It is man who with his misguided expertise tears away this comforting curtain of mist and forces us to see the reality. Perhaps it would be better, certainly it would be kinder if we were left in blissful ignorance.
It is nature who decides that an unborn foetus should spontaneously abort, but it is man who in his infinite wisdom uses his skill to prevent this happening, often at great physical and emotional expense to both child and parent.
And what of the kindly killers of the aged and frail, Influenza and Pneumonia? They too have been taken away from us by man’s diligent search for knowledge and acclaim. Antibiotics, penicillin, sulfa-drugs have combined to rob the elderly of their one escape.
How the scientists and researchers boast of the extension to life expectancy that they have achieved by their quest for knowledge and experimentation, alas there is little to be said for the improvement in the quality of life experienced during those extra years. To many they are simply an extension of torment and misery. Years of pain, handicap, and confinement in nursing homes; a feared conclusion to life for those unfortunate enough to have need of their services.
If we should beg for release from a life of suffering we are told that it is opposed to the Laws of God, and this from individuals, and their supporters who have actively and with pride, intervened in the Laws of God and Nature by compelling us to live beyond our allotted three score years and ten.
Throughout the dark pre-dawn hours, Death has stood in the corner of my room. I do not need spectacles to see the tears of compassion in his eyes as he waits for that moment when he may take me in his arms to the warmth and comfort of eternal sleep. The early light invades the room, and he is no longer there. There is no joy for me in the early morning song of the birds or the first golden rays of the sun, they only serve to remind me that I must struggle through another day of pain.
