Medicare and Social Security are not related beyond the fact that they are both government programs for older folks. You need to sign up for Medicare even if you are not yet drawing Social Security.
One little caveat.
You must have paid into the system to be eligible.
My neighbor rushed down on her 65th birthday to sign up for Medicare - even
tho I'd told her there was no point.
When they explained to her that you don't get it free and that the payment is
taken out of your monthly benefit, she was crushed.
Never put in a dime. Has nothing to draw against.
Guess she could get it and pay for it if she had any money, but of course
she has very little, since she doesn't work and her husband is a janitor.
They can barely afford their mortgage payments and food as it is.

Has she checked to see if she would qualify for Medicaid?

Her husband has her covered under his half assed policy from work, so
she's not eligible..................unless they divorce.
Both have health problems and the scrips are killing them.
