Don't forget good ol' Tampa Bay Area of Florida. I live in a nice,
1BR apartment, near a good shopping center, on a busy bus line, on a
major highway. It's less than $500 a month. If you can stand the heat
and humidity much of the year, you might like it. There hasn't been a
hurricane hit here full-force in over 40 years.
And, once you are permanant, you will find that your vote goes
further in Florida than any other state.

Andy comments:

I can second that recommendation. There are many areas along the
Gulf Coast of Florida and in central Florida that are nice, quiet and
have
lots of recreational opportunities, mostly centered around the ocean
and the swamps. We considered moving there for retirement, but
chose to stay in Texas instead.
We lived in Florida for around 12 or so years, in Ft Lauderdale,
and
had a little getaway place up around Lake Okechobee. It is far too
crowded
along the Atlantic coast for us, tho, and we explored other areas as
retirement time rolled around. There are some really nice places.

Florida has no state income tax, and the property taxes are not
unrealistic. Lots of tourists in the winter, but you learn to live
with that.

If you like water sports, nice weather, and palm trees.... Florida
has a lot to offer....

But I still like living on a lake in Texas better. Housing is a
lot cheaper,
no state income tax, no property tax until we both die, low vehicle
taxes,
and the state has much more diversity --- deer, pigs, and raccoons
wandering
thru my back yard, and owls all over hell...... I like owls.... a
hell of
a lot better than alligators :>)))))

Owls are beneficial.
Keep the rodent population under control.
