Me too! I was feeding 5 lbs. a day and enjoyed the little birds, then
the damned pigeons came by the hundreds, fouling everything.
Now it's just Humming Bird feeders.
Sad what pigeons can do.

Yes. Birds are definitely NOT my favorite type of animals. But, the
absolute WORST type of stinkin' bird is the Canada Goose !! Mainly
because they are so large and so numerous and so dumb. Their turds are
something you might expect from a German Shepard. They've ruined many
a
good golf course.

My bird feeding is limited to tossing out stale bread in the back
yard. When the bread
is gone so are the birds.
I also occasionally go to a local park and feed the ducks where I
always encounter
a few Canadian geese. They try to dominate the ducks and chase them
away.
By the way, McDave, I've never seen a Goose turd. They usually drop a
big "splat"
that looks like a small cow-pie with an oil slick on top. Maybe the
geese I encounter all have "the squirts".

I lived in a town where there was a nice scenic little pond in the center of
town with a park around it, for about 20 years. This pond was so favored
by the Canada geese, that the goose poop problem became really extreme.
Canada geese eat grass, so their turds are not only plentiful, but about the
size of poodle poops.
Admittedly they don't smell as bad as dog poop, but the park became almost
completely unusable for any activity which might involve contact with the
grass. Even walking, you could slip and fall on it. About the only
activity kids could use the park for, was bringing stale bread to feed the
geese, which of course drew more geese and more goose poop. They are
lovely when there are just a few, but they multiply very effectively and
with no real predators, become a nuisance very soon. They no longer even
really migrated, but just stayed there almost all year round.
On the good side of it, they mate for life and are loving parents to their
goslings. A pitiful sight was one goose of a pair, killed by a car, and
its mate staying by the carcass, grieving for days, till it became obvious
that it wasn't going to get up. Another was one being injured and the
other remaining with it, even though it couldn't fly. We saw a lot of the
Canada Geese over those years, and they are lovely creatures, but even
lovely creatures need population control. It was a big controversy in that
town. Some wanted to kill a few off every year, to thin the flocks, and
others favored leaving the park to them, no matter what.
Where I live just now, there is a stream, and a tiny area with a very
shallow pond in my yard, and every year a pair comes to have their babies.
Soon as the babies can fly, they are out of here and back with the main
flock... somewhere. Having a large piece of property and two German
Shepherds whose poops are mammoth and requiring real pooper scooper
diligence, a few little goose poops in the spring, becomes irrelevant.
Yesterday I saw a mama bear and three cubs who scampered across the road
into the forest, right in front of us. Now there was a wonderful sight!
We have seen many bears since living here, but it is always an impressive
sight.

Around the Bay Area, we have the same goose problems, so bad that the
golf courses hire dogs(&people) to keep them away.
