Considering all the nuts on Usenet, a woman living alone would be
foolish to give out that information. Name ,maybe, but not location.

Whether on not they use a name that is obviously a pseudonym, a pen
name, a moniker, or a stage name is quite immaterial.
One can sign their messages as John Brown when their name is really
Jim Smith. Would Marilyn Monroe been any better off is she had
remained to be Norma Jean?

Now there is a question that could be taken on many levels as well as replied to on many levels.
She would always and ever still be herself, like we all are, and she could never escape that anymore than any of us can.
"No matter where you go, there you are.." (old zen saying).
Had she remained true to her self, rather than have manufactured a hollywood icon named "Marilyn Monroe" she may indeed have been better off. But then again she might have ended up a nobody named Norma Jean Smith or Jones or whatever, since she might not have lived such a public existence. Would she have been a happier 'nobody' with a long life and grandchildren all around her, rather than a famous midlife suicide? No one will ever know, and our speculation falls on an uncaring universe.
Living in the spotlight, one almost always creates a false image. It goes with the territory. It is another reason why so many of us common lot choose pseudonyms for the internet. We can be Superman or Wonder Woman or whatever we want to appear to be to others.
The internet is our own 15 minutes of fame.
We are all different people to different people in our lives. To some degree we all have a "Norma Jean" inside of us... the lonely little kid that the other kids teased, or the kid that went to school in shoes that were raggedy, or who had a beaky nose or was chubby or had a parent that was the town laughingstock. Or we were the kids of the rich folks, and always wanted to fit in with the "cool" crowd. Everybody has some insecure fool deep down in there. So you call yourself whatever you want on the internet.
The internet is the great leveller, the great common denominator. You are only what you put down in words from your keyboard. Your money doesn't count, and your power doesn't either. Here you are all equal, the bum and the saint, the serial killer and the maniac along with the famous incognito dude. Ya' pays your $9.99 to Juno.com (or whomever) and ya' posts yer thoughts. Nobody cares what color you are, or whether you are beautiful or ugly, fat or thin. Only what you say reveals what is in your mind, whether it is a sewer or a perfect garden........ and these are almost universal values. Everyone hates anger and bitterness and crude ways, and everyone appreciates loving kindness and genuineness.
This is a forum of words and your words only will express who you really are. So be careful what you write, as reading your own sent items folder will tell the tale. (Imagine what SOME people might see there?) Anger, hatred, rants...... or love, compassion, kindness.... it's in there and out there.
We are all different people to different people. A name is just a name, but it is the motivation behind it that makes it have some special meaning. A pet name from a lover, a derisive name from a rival, an assumed name that makes us bigger or smaller..... as long as we never forget that...."Wherever you go, there you are..." and that we are all in the same boat of Samsara.
(beg pardon for zen rant... it just popped out)
