No animal (excluding humans) should ever gain a place of trust and love in
the mind of a human that is reserved for close family, friends, and loved
ones. But all living creatures must be subjected to, secondary to, the
wants and needs of homo sapiens. That's the way life is on this planet
Earth. We control them. We devour them. We overwork them. We are, at
least at this time in evolutionary history, at the top of the life-chain.

But that does not mean that we should condone torturing them. In general I
support the work/goals of the SPCA and the laws or our governments to
eliminate their mistreatment. Mahatma Gandhi declared that the greatness of
a society is characterized by the way they treat their animals of all
levels.

The black guy running dog fights got what was coming to him. He got off
light far as I'm concerned.

However, it seems that the courts included shooting the unneeded/unwanted
dogs as part of his criminal activities. I question that. Shooting or a
heavy blow to the head is as humane a way of causing death as any I can
think of. These are the ways that thousands of animals are killed each
day to provide our food.

When an animal's owner decides the animal, for whatever reason is no longer
useful or needed, the owner should have the right to put the animal away.
What do we want to do - - - begin instituting "Old Folks" homes for dogs,
cats, birds, snakes, etc., etc., with LifeSupport systems and all that
entails ??

For sure dogs are special; I've had a seven in my lifetime. But, when they
become crippled, diseased, unable to function, or the owner is no longer
able to care for them, then the owner should have the right to kill them or
have them killed quickly and without suffering. As to the "when", that should be left entirely to the owner's discretion. It's a sad day indeed for the owner but it's the humane way.

Dave,

Humanely putting an elderly pet to sleep is fair and right, but what that jerk Vick did, is beyond that description. I doubt he shed a single tear over the loss of any of them.

Those dogs were not pets, nor were they intended as livestock for food. They were part of an illegal dogfighting scene, which is cruel and inhumane. Not a single one of them is fit to be a pet, having been trained since puppyhood to kill other dogs or other animals on sight.

In my opinion it is disgusting to tolerate criminal behavior from a sports figure, while others doing the same crime, rot in jail. If you ask me he got off way too easy for what he did. He may be a talented, but he's too stupid and cruel minded to be a role model for kids, and ought to be banned from professional sports forever.

I agree with 75 percent of your commentary.

And, I agree 100 percent regarding professional sports but I'd go a little further: Professional Sports (or what most mean when referring to "professional sports", i.e., Football, Basketball, Baseball, Soccer, etc., etc.) should all be banned----- FOREVER as a business enterprise ! They should never be allowed to evolve into "professions"; they are (or should be) SPORTS! Kept at the amateur/scholastic levels; all for the enjoyment of those who like to participate in them; not for those who want to throw a public drunk and scream and jump up and down watching some game about which they usually know little or nothing. Now, these things are little different from the cruel and inhumane and perverted spectacles that the Romans held in their Coliseum.

There are only a very few of these sports "Professionals" that should be allowed to become roll models for little children. However, as long as they are paid $Millions/year to provide the spectacles, that is exactly what they will be to our young. They, with their lavish homes, lavish cars, dope, and steroids. I say let those that have enough brains (there are a few) go to school and really learn something that will allow them to do something worthwhile and earn an honest living.

In particular, no taxpayer (Fed., State, Local) should be used to pay for these giant stadiums these assholes play in and the giant parking and highway facilities required.

These "Professional Players" should be allowed to play with themselves on weekends in whatever way, or place, they desire. During the week they should be working in factories building stuff that will allow us to tell the Chinese to take their baubles and trinkets and stick 'em where the sun don't shine !!!
