the world, so which Muslims are you referring to? Will we wipe out
the Islamic religion? Fat chance of that. Muslims live in all parts
of the world. The U.S. -- or its leadership, that is, -- thought it
could impose a Western type government in Iraq. We can see how that
worked out. I say we go after the known terrorists -- Bin Laden who
is still on the loose, and Al Queda wherever it exists. Quite frankly,
it is the best we can do.
I realize there's no chance of wiping out the Muslim religion,
although it would be fine with me if there were some way to do it.
Apparently, bin Laden is in Pakistan but the Pakistanis are not going
to cooperate with us in killing him. He has too many sympathizers
there and Musharif (I know that's not spelled correctly but you know
who I mean) is too shaky on his throne to risk it. Much the same
situation exists in a number of countries and will hamper our efforts
to effectively deal with Al Qaeda. It appears that bin Laden has a
lot of fans in the Muslim world, even among those who haven't been to
one of his training schools or volunteered to be martyrs. Our little
adventure in Iraq has been just what bin Laden probably prayed for.
My pessimism is rooted in the fact that I don't think our "leadership"
has come up with any effective ways to deal with any of the attendant
problems, including the ones they've created.
Doesn't seem so. But you know, you and I (and Olly) are well advised
not to live in fear. Terrorism operates by sporadic attacks in the
hopes to inspire fear and panic among the rest of the population. The
chances of any one of us to be involved in a terrorist attack are
miniscule. And I say that having lived in NYC on 9/11. If we let
fear rule us, guess what, the terrorists win.
I read today Londoners are going about their business and not reacting
in the least with panic. They are to be admired and copied.
I am pretty well convinced the Brits will get to the bottom of these
threats. They did a good job rounding up the perps of the subway
attacks.
I am totally unwilling to allow the quality of life to be impacted by
panicking about Muslims. I admit to being fearful for a few weeks post
9/11 when riding the subway but then I, and most New Yorkers, said to
hell with it, we are going on with our lives.
I seem somehow to have given everyone the mistaken impression that I'm
personally fearful of being on the receiving end of a terrorist
attack. I'm not. Not even a crazy Muslim would think to attack this
place. It concerns me that my son and his family live in the DC
suburbs and I think DC is a likely target, but this is not something I
lie awake worrying about.
I'm concerned about the damage Shrub et al have done to this country,
especially getting us in this mess in Iraq and I have absolutely no
confidence that whoever takes over in 2008 will be able to straighten
it out. I won't be around long enough for any of it to affect me very
much, but it will affect my family and the rest of the country.
I long for the innocent (or ignorant) days of my youth when religion
meant (to me) that people who believed in God went to church on Sunday
and let it go at that. Now we have crazy fundies in this country
trying to ram their anti-gay, anti-abortion, anti-just about
everything else down our throats and the Muslims, who make our fundies
look damned tame by comparison, want to kill everyone who won't become
a Muslim and live under Sharia law. It seems like the whole damned
world has lost its mind.
I hear you, Emily. I feel the same.

Evelyn
