I say, from personal experience, if it is at all possible, and
you can handle a higher co-pay, go for a Doctor of Internal Medicine
as your primary physician. I advise anybody in our age group to do
this. You will have larger co-pays, and you may get charged with more
lab work, but this is what you want to have. It's more expensive than
a PA or NP, or even Family Doctor, but you get up-tp-the-minute
information about what's going on inside your body.
If transportation is an issue, check to see if there is something like
Alliance Care in your area. These doctors come and see you, and bill
Medicare and your secondary insutrance. All you get hit with is the
deductable, and any not-covered services.
I use Alliance Care, and have since I went on Medicare in 2003. They
do all the diagnostics in your home, including ultrasound, x-rays, and
cardiograms. And, of course, lab work. We've headed off a couple of
potentially serious conditions because the Dr. does blood work each
time he visits.

You are SOOOO right! I found out the hard way.

Nurse Practitioner is no better or worse than a Doctor - the problem is
finding one that is competent.

My personal experience (with 2 different ones) is that Nurse
Practitioner
is more than adequate for 90% of reasons you go to the Doctor and if she
is really good knows when she/he is entering that other 10% and sees
that
you get to an MD.

Yeah, I said that too. For the last 7 years. But the problem is that
they
don't KNOW when they are out of their league and only operate on what they
actually know.

I am not going to buy that line anymore. I learned the hard way. I could
have lost a leg, that is pretty serious. Thank goodness my two lady
friends at Rotary, both of whom are doctors wives, grabbed me and told me
together that I REALLY need to get to a REAL doctor. Thank goodness I
did.
Best thing I ever did.

The other guy was out of his league but he didn't know he was out of his
league! He just didn't have the training or the knowledge. We are all
falling for the junk the HMO's are throwing at us.

It's all about money.

While I agree that it's all about money as far as the HMOs and
insurance industry are concerned, it doesn't change the fact that some
PAs and NPs are smarter than some doctors. Some "real" doctors should
never have gotten out of med school.

I would say it depends. Of course there is a lot of individual stuff
involved. In my case, in 7 years I never once saw the real doctor. He
never came in, or for all I know, ever reviewed my case. If you have
multiple things wrong with you, or some potentially dangerous health matter,
it is different than say if you just need a new scrip for your high blood
pressure med.
