Test

All that feedback just because Mary Jo wanted to test her news
reader.

Someone using Forte Agent ought to be sophisticated enough to know
basic netiquette regarding posting test questions.

Alan, you are being astonishingly, nit-pickingly silly about this.

Evelyn

And you, Evelyn are being astonishingly judgmental to infer that
what annoys me is less than it ought to be, simply because the same
thing does not annoy you. Perhaps it would be best if we leave 'to
each his own,' and decide for ourselves what is an annoyance and
what is not. And that done, do not try to project our decisions on
others.

I enjoy your posts very much Alan, and frankly, though tempests in
teapots strike me as a waste of time, but if that is what you like,
go for it.

To paraphrase a saying, Evelyn, "watch the pennies and the dollars
will take care of themselves." If you don't watch the pennies, you
won't have any dollars to worry about. I trust you get the gist of
those comments in view of yours.

OH ALAN! That was what my miserly ex husband used to say! LOL!

:-)

Aside from the jest, I do understand where you are coming from but I
still think that usenet is too big to try and "police" with complaints
about test posts. There are genuine trolls, evil people (and we know
who they are) and all sorts of nasties out there.

Some things are just too small to fuss about, unless you are into
shoveling you know what against the tide.

But seriously, I appreciate your posts and for the most part, we are in
agreement on a lot of it.

Evelyn, all I intended to say is that one witty, illustrative saying
supporting one's point deserves its rebuke with another. It's a polite
form of "one upsmanship." However, as they say, ignorance is no excuse,
and perhaps the original poster didn't know about netiquette, and the
proper place to post test messages. Although I doubt that, one, because
the poster was using a somewhat sophisticated and specialized
newsreader, not expected tobe found in a novice, and second, as the
names are not familiar, and may very well be trolls. Given the benefit
of the doubt, my post was instructive, hopefully.

But I do thank you for your compliment, and I too enjoy your
participation, even in threads where I simply lurk.

Do you suppose that it could have been the first time she used that
"specialized" news reader?

Whether or not you used a new and different newsreader has no bearing on
WHERE you ought to have posted your test message, and that you SHOULD
have been sufficiently conversant with "netiquette' and Usenet itself.
Fact remains, you weren't. In truth, THAT is one of the reasons why
news:alt.test was created; so that people like yourself could 'practice'
using a new newsreader, without inserting needless and irrelevant
bandwidth into NG's and where participants have other objectives.

Your criticism, time and efforts could be directed at more meaningful
situations.

My criticisms, time and efforts would have been unnecessary had YOU
expended the time and effort to educate yourself more fully about the
medium you are using. And I will decide what is meaningful for myself;
not you.

While Alan comes across as a well educated, well informed, and erudite
person it also quite apparent that he is completely "full of himself"
and has inclinations to be a control freak.

And I will also make my own decisions, Mr. Know it All, without any
input from you.

Ah,now when the criticisms are well placed, we see the final come back
of the defeated: The retreat to the ad homenim attack. Attack the
criticizer, as if that somehow negates the improper behavior of the
perpetrator.

Never works and never will. But it DOES tend to assuage a shallow ego,
after you were properly called on the reason that precipitated the
slander. After all, it is because I am 'full of myself', and am a
'control freak,' that caused your ignorance. Do those two seem to have
some connection? Didn't think so.

You would have been better served to admit your ignorance and say 'thank
you,' and have gone on your way. But not you. You couldn't take the
rebuke. So you relied on the only course of reply open to you: Ad
homenim slander.

So have fun and slander away all you want. Fact remains you STILL were
ignorant of 'Netiquette,' were still ignorant of general Usenet
protocols, informal as they are, and STILL posted a test message improperly.

I am underwhelmed by your pomposity.

Mary Jo

The concept of Netiquette is a good one, but it died a long time ago, when computers became so widely available to everybody. I still practice netiquette myself, for the most part, but I never posted test posts to a test newsgroup, I only ever posted them to the group I intended to be in.
