Phoebe - you weave a challenging and sad tale with your post - and, my
heart goes out to you - truly - at the amount of pain you had to go
through in your lifetime. You did not add the fact that you also lost
your husband relatively early on. Much as you and I have argued -
politically - and much as we seem to be on opposite ends of many topics
- I take my hat off to you for having preserved - still - even at your
age - a zest for living, for being in touch, for painting, for wanting
to continue to exist and appreciate the world around you - small though
it has become (as has mine, somewhat). After what you have had to
endure, it is impressive , to say the least, that you can still
appreciate your every-day existence. There are many possible
explanations for your strength - I won't enumerate them - and it does
not matter where it all came from - you own them and practice them. I
am not at all convinced that - given your life experiences - I would
have the same stamina as you seem to possess. Regardless of the reason
for this - it is admirable - and you continue to enjoy your days. = = =
You and I are, perhaps the two oldest members of this discussion group,
and, although that is about all we two had in common (!!!!!)
nevertheless, you certainly set a good example for many, in showing
strength and stubbornly adhering to your firmly entrenched philosophies,
political and otherwise. I am not quite as "owned" by your intense
interest in the world - both social - militarily - economically -
philosophically - I feel more like a nervous spectator,sometimes
involved, sometimes not at all - and caring only for "me and mine." -
since, in the final analysis, that is what it is all about. I do feel
blessed in that I have a loving family - quite near me, and that is my
shrinking world - and worry.
I do share your fear of what might happen; it is cataclysmic and
unthinkable - and,as I explained in some other posts of mine, that is
why my - at times - preoccupation with worry about my sons. At that
point - I cease to care - the way you do - about the rest of the world -
it boils down to my two sons and their families - and nothing else. The
world can just go to h...!!! At my age- one sometimes comes to some odd
conclusions - perhaps as a matter of self-preservation - emotionally!!!
Anyway - just wanted to tell you that - much as we will always disagree
- I admire your tenacity in your beliefs.
Olly
