Andy replies:
I disagree. Look at how I did this reply. JM does the same. We paste the particular statement we are replying to , together with the name of the poster.
THEN , we add our own comments.
In this way, the reader can first see the issue, and then the response. And none of this cut and paste stuff where lengthy and drawn out wordiness is pasted , followed by an insignificant comment........
While I can't state that "this is the way it should be done", I can say that this is the way "I" do it, and unless I see a better technique used, I'll stay with it. And in 10 years, I haven't seen a better way...
Any redundant wordiness crap in MY posts are due to me.. :>)))))
Likewise for insignificant comments :>))))

Andy S - The criticism that is sometimes invoked when one posts in the fashion you just described is that the poster is "editing the original statement" to change the gist of it.

Exactly.
While it feels correct to insert topic by topic, there is always the temptation
for the second or third poster to edit.
Likewise irritating is removing the entire original post, so no one can tell
who is being responded to or who said what previously.
Top or bottom is fine with me, as long as the original post is left in tact.
