I lost my old original
K5RHO in 1966 when I moved back here to 3Land....
I sure had me a ball with that ET3USF call. Got two DXCC's in about three
months ......... Mostly on 20 meters SSB.
Then over a period of about three years I managed to get a DXCC in code as
well.
I've still got all the QSL's and the old Ethiopian License (a rather
decorative certificate). All a part of the junk my descendants will have
to go through some day.
In the early 70's there were only about 15 calls altogether in Ethiopia.
They were personally issued by Haile Sellassie. Some of them were hardly
used. We(us Americans) had eight of them. His son and daughter had two
of them. I built a rotatable Tri-Band Cubical Quad and tower on top of our
house there. With a 2 kw SSB Amp and the entire Red Sea for a ground plane
I could work DX a good as any place on the planet. The government
security police didn't like my directional antenna (it was better than any
they had) that but they didn't shut me down.
I managed to sell the whole works to a local when we were run out of the
country in the fall/winter of 1973/74/
