Re: Whats the legal age for Senior Discounts?

Yeah. When other guys in high school were stealing hub caps, I was
stealing
drive-in speakers....

I've been a ham ( W4OAH ) since , oh, about 1960 or so and was
building
my own transmitters and receivers back in high school. It was only
natural
to go into electrical engineering, which gave me a good career and a
comfortable secure life. Rarely have I had to actually do work, since
most of
the time I was working on stuff I would gladly have done for
free........

I have kept my license current ( Extra Class) so that I could
legally test and
improve things I build myself. That makes me "old school", since most
ham operators today just pay a few hundred dollars for a store bought
radio and start talking on it..... While that is another fun facet of
the hobby,
I don't really have much to say on the radio and would typically build
up a
system and make a dozen contacts, and , when I decided it was working
like
I wanted, put it back on the shelf and build something else.....
Consequently, I
have many boxes full of home built.... stuff..... which I cannot bring
myself to
throw out., in spite of Joanie's encouragement to do so...... I
suppose she
will just dump it all in the coffin with me if she can get it to
fit........

The monthly meetings and such were an important part of my social
life for a long time.... Now it has been replaced by the INTERNET.,
and
I haven't built much in the last dozen years or so...... but there's
no way
I will dismantle my workshop. I feel comfortable in it.....

Dave is correct about the disaster communications, as regular
networks
practice on a weekly basis . Lots of opportunities to socialize there
for
people who have an interest in it....... There's a LOT more to
disaster
communications than buying a radio at Radio Shack and calling for help.
Rigid rules for network operation are practiced so that information can
be
passed efficiently.... Boring as hell to listen to, as an observer,
tho......
Like listening in on your mother's telephone conversations.......
