Discover card, Citi Master Card and others each have a virtual number
application that will run on your PC desktop that will fill-in online
internet orders with your "virtual" credit card information. It will
generate either a one time use 16 digit number (different from your real
number) which it assigns to you to use for this transaction either one
time or you can make it multi-use but only for this one merchant (in this
case you can assign a max dollar amount for the year for that
merchant/number combo). It also form fills in all of your info Name,
address, virtual account number, expiration date (virtual) and the 3
digit number on the back of the card (virtual). Once this number is used
for you by a merchant, no other merchant can use this same number and if
you desire, it can only be used just that one time and is then discarded.

You do not have to keep track of these virtual numbers, but can look up
ones that are active for any of your merchants if you want to reuse them
for your next order for prescriptions or whatever.

I have at times used this to generate a new number which I then used for
a mail order as well... just filling in the info off of the screen.

These applications are designed to pop up automatically when you are
viewing an online order page, however I have removed both of mine (MC &
Discover) from my startup and just start them prior to the rare occasions
when I am actually going to use them (cause I don't want the two of them
dualing each other for the order).

Discover calls their's Discover Deskshop, Citi MC calls theirs Citi
Virtual Account Numbers.
