Re: Should we know our enemy?

PH - for once, I do agree with you, In regard to the question of
estgablishing democracy in the Middle East. A fine goal - but whether
it is workable is another question. It also cannot be forced down their
throats. You wrote whether we will be able to survive the present loss
of lives and money. The answer - in my view - is a resounding "yes."
Loss of lives aside - that can never be "overcome" - but we are strong
and will, indeed,be able to oercome what it presently costs us.
But you posed some very legitimate questions, namely,for one thing,
whether we can survive this struggle. Well,I am convinced that we can;
we are powerful and have always survived the struggles.
I also feel that,at present,Bush is, himself,struggling with what might
be the best approach to his question,namely,specifically, how to handle
Iran and North Korea. He is obviously not planning to attack them - at
least not yet - but nothing else seems to work - but he is trying.
Whether our way (or the highway!!!!) is the best solution for the Middle
East countries is hard to tell; as you said, their cultures are so
vastly different - I would think it would take many more years of
exposure to democracy around them, to finally enable them to want to
live like that themselves. *(just look at the Saudis)
'But - given all of that - it is the extreme element of the terrorists
whom we HAVE to fight - all around the world,with any measure at our
command. There is simply no other realistic way of dealing with tghese
medieval minds, regardless of whether we "understand"them or not - that
is irrelevant,since they threaten to murder us all. which, by the way,
is the latest pronouncement of the newly elected man in Iran - that
Islam will spread all across the world,and the enemy must be
eliminated.!!!!!!
