The climate along most of the west coast of the US is moderated by the
Pacific ocean and the Japan current. Here, our climate is moderated by
the water all around us, a pretty constant 50 degree heat sink. During
the winter, it rarely gets below 40 degrees. The exception is when we
get northeast wind that blows through the Fraser Gap (in the Cascades)
and can take the temperature down into the teens. Fortunately that
doesn't happen often. Our house is sheltered from the north, so that
weather doesn't bother us much. We get some pretty spectacular storms
from the south. They scare the dogs, but otherwise we tie down the deck
furniture and enjoy the comfort of our home which is built to take it.
During the summer it is very rare to get temperatures above 80 degrees.
We pretty much sleep under a quilt year round and only use a fan
during the summer.

The downside is that the winters can be pretty gray, as Jeff has pointed
out in another thread. Our home was built with that in mind, using all
light colors and good lighting.

Thanks for the info about north Washington. My knowledge of that
area is very limited.
I agree completly about the US west coast, after many many trips
to California. I've never seen a bad day there, tho is does get a
little
chilly around San Francisco...

However, one has to weigh the population density, the types of
people,
the tax structure, the cost of living, etc..... and suddenly
California isn't
such a good idea for many retirees......

Here in Texas, which has no state income tax, I have a nice
house
on a couple acres of woods on a lake, for the same price I could buy
a wretched hovel in California....And no real estate taxes after
reaching
the age of 65 (deferred until death)....as well as having the tax on
the
homestead "frozen" to the amount it was when one turns 65.
California can't afford to accomodate seniors to that level -- they
just
don't have the money....
On the other hand, one has to hide one's marijuana plants in
Texas,
since the Mexican illegals here don't like the competition.....
Probly
a lot easier to get high in California......... obviously :>))))))
