"Obama criticized over spill aid rejection

The oil spill crisis takes a fresh twist, as reports surface of the
Obama administration's refusal to accept a series of foreign offers to
clean up the slick.
In late April -- only days after the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded in
the Mexican Gulf killing 11 workers -- the Netherlands offered a
supply of sophisticated skimmers and dredging devices to gather oil
off the water surface, the Associated Press said.
The European country, home to Royal Dutch Shell, is specialized in
mitigating oil spills in the North Sea and elsewhere.
The Dutch also said that they were ready to give assistance with
building sand barriers along the coast of Louisiana to protect
sensitive marshlands.
During the course of the crisis, the White House received 21 other aid
offers from 17 countries and international groups, State Department
spokesman P.J. Crowley said.
However, the Obama administration declined all offers.
Washington cited the Jones Act, which restricts foreign ships from
certain activities in US waters, as the main reason behind the turn
down.
This is while, during the Hurricane Katrina disaster, five years ago,
the Bush administration waived the Jones Act in order to facilitate
some foreign assistance, but such a waiver was not issued in this
case.
Critics say that this shows that the Obama administration was too slow
to assess the chaotic situation and make the most of these foreign
offers.
Now, after nearly two months of oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico,
the White House has finally appealed to the European Union and several
other countries for specialized help and equipment."

Rather dumb to turn down help. Jones Act indeed, he believed the
@#$$^%#%&$%$%*^&%(^ execs at BP-that and pride perhaps. There is
*always* a way around Jones Act trash. Pride be damned-and the BP execs.
Save the Walruses in the Gulf of Mexico!!!
Jim, here's what got us to where we are. To a large extent, it's the
doing of the government, not the idiots at BP.
1. The Exxon-Valdez happened.
2. Exxon agreed to accept full liability for the spill, and it cost
them billions.
3. When it was over, Exxon lobbied congress, and congress passed a law
limiting Exxon's (and BP's) liability in future spills to $75 million.
(A HUGE MISTAKE)
4. BP applied to drill in 500 feet of water. The bureaucrats wanted
them much further offshore -- in 5,000 feet of water. BP had never
dealt with a blowout at those depths, and really hadn't a clue -- BUT,
their potential liability was ONLY $75 million, so they agreed.
5. Here we are, today. Our esteemed president needs someone to
demonize -- a public to fool, so the $75 million, the stupid venal
congress, and the stupider bureaucrats are all swept under the rug.
It's Goldman Sachs all over again.
Screwed again by the law of unintended consequences. Well, guess what,
the relief well may not do the job. Then what?
