I don't know why I don't feel impelled to get a recording device
for whatever the new TV system is called, because I used the
VCRs on the old system quite a bit. Maybe it's just inertia, or
maybe I just feel nowadays that if I can't be bothered watching
something when it comes on, maybe I don't need to watch it at
all.
Islander, everything is on DVD nowadays. It is a shame, but sometimes you
just have to break into a new mode of entertainment and buy the necessary
equipment. DVD players are very cheap nowadays, so it shouldn't be a big
deal anymore.
What you're responding to was by me, not Islander.
I think Islander has made the transition to the third
millennium, unlike myself.
"Entertainment", while a respected word in the
English language, is a red flag word to me. In
Hollywood usage it sometimes means "something
very fraught and boring by 'established' people who
are far more famous than I would think they should
be."
That applies to most movies too, including probably
ALL movies about distressed housewives and about
engaged couples having Romantic difficulties, and
similar fare. That being the case, a DVD player is
not a high priority for me. I probably will get one if
and when I get a new computer, though. I already
have a DVD disk writer on my computer, but I use it
to make 4.7M MP3 music disks. I don't think I even
have the freen I'd need with it to play DVDs.
"Freen" is a word I made up in adolescence. I
hope the meaning is plain enough in this context.
I don't watch movies -- although I have rented a few oldies
from Netflix. But Netfiix offers DVDs of TV programs,
many of which are not on anymore but that I enjoyed
watching when they were. Many from the BBC. Several
episodes per disk. A hour or somewhat less is about the
limit of time I can stay focused.
Netflix has an excellent distribution network. You can
create a list of movies or TV programs you would like to
rent and when you drop the one you have watched in the
mail the next one arrives remarkably quickly as they
have distribution centers all over the map.
local distribution center and I now get my films overnight once again.
I like the convenience of returning them to the store for exchanges
also.
