Needless to say, The Bell Curve is not accepted by the scientific
community as credible research. Anyone interested can find ample
data on the web.
Jeff will respond is citing some work from the mid 90s supporting
it. This support quickly phased out and I have seen nothing to support
it later.
Note first is a book not an article published in a peer reviewed
journal.
In fact Murray is not an academic but has worked for
right wing think tanks all of his professional life, and these ring
wing
tanks sponsored his writing publication. The book was sponsored
by a think tank accused of racial bias, with a eugenics slant.
They themselves recommended "elimination of welfare policies that
encourage
poor women to have babies"
Particularly impressive is the work, "Inequality by Design:Cracking
the Bell Curve Myth"
by a group of UC academics Claude S. Fischer, Michael Hout, Martín
Sánchez Jankowski,
Samuel R. Lucas, Ann Swidler, and Kim Vos, which even showed that the
relationships
found by Murray and Herrnstein were not even Bell shaped! The authors
tinkered
with the data to make the appear so!
One thing was found with newborns a long time ago. If born with
cataracts
and these are not operated very early, the children remained blind for
life even if they later have the operation a few month after birth. A
child's
brain develops rapidly, any neglect of exposure to the environment
results in
basic retardation which is unrecoverable later. Children of the poor
have
generally poor environments, they hear many less words in the early
periods
of their lives than do upper class children.
I suppose that a racist like El Castor would blame the two fold higher
infant mortality rates in Black children compared to White are
inherited.
Note the fact that these differences exist means that racism is still
effective in denying Blacks proper medical care, even for the young
and the helpless.
It is no mystery why racists are against universal medical care.
Keeping the poor handicapped allows maintaining dominance
and providing cheap labor, when needed.
