GM to form China venture, invest $293 million

By Fang Yan and Edmund Klamann

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - General Motors said on Sunday it has agreed to
set up a light commercial vehicle production venture with major
Chinese automaker FAW Group, with total investment of 2 billion yuan
($293 million).

The 50-50 joint venture, based in the northeast China city of
Changchun in Jilin province, will make light-duty trucks and vans, GM
said in a statement.

"For us in China, this is an important complement to the rest of our
portfolio," Kevin Wale, president and managing director for GM's China
operations, told reporters in a conference call.

As Pat Buchanan said for the millionth time when I saw
him on McLaughlin Saturday, if there's no protection for
American wages, there's no way American workers at
$40 an hour can produce products cheaper than
Chinese and Indian people at $2 an hour. It's just
common sense, a rare commodity. Most highly educated
jobs can be outsourced to highly educated people in
India just as easily as so many of the blue collar jobs
already have been.

We need to re-instate tariffs. Nearly every other country has
tariffs. Eliminating tariffs enables corporations to shift their
manufacturing overseas to low wage countries. So much for caring
about American workers.

By the way. The only unionized Toyota plant in the USA in Fremont, CA
is shutting down and moving it's production to other USA and Canadian
plants. 5000 more laid off. We have to put an end to this crap.
