Well, I was going to put in the fall garden(s) replanting all my earth
boxes. This hot Texas sun is something. Just about everyone of my earth
boxes crumbled at the touch. The plastic just shattered. (those 18 gallon
storage bins from Walmart). Soooo.

Friday I was at TSC (Tractor Supply Company) and I saw these big rubber 40
gallon tubs. We use them to water horses and cows and goats and things.
They're about 32 bucks each. The Walmart things were somewhere in the 7
dollar range and lasted two summers, one winter. I know these rubber tubs
last at least 20 years. So I bought 6 of them. I've got some unused
corrugate metal, 8' sheets. I'm going to cut those to fit down into the
tubs to make the tray for the potting soil to sit on. Drill the holes etc
and make me some earth boxes on steroids.

Last night I ate the last of what was the best tasting, sweetest 1015
onions I have ever eaten. I wish I would have planted more of them. Tomato
plants are all gone. Didn't get a lot of tomatoes (eat your heart out Dan
Quayle) but what we got was pretty darn good. Cucumbers were great and
lasted longer than expected. Jalapeno peppers were damn hot and bell
peppers were okay. I planted another tomato plant and a jalapeno and bell
pepper plant last week in what was left of the old boxes.

I really like this way of gardening and I think these tubs are going to
make it even better. I'm going to set up a little hoop house this time
around and see if I can keep some of this blistering sun at bay. I think
I'm beginning to believe this global warming stuff. But I think it's just
like the business cycle, comes around ever so often. We humans might be
making it a little hotter but when you look at all the other things out
there, I don't think we make ripple. I think it's just Satan's way of
saying "don't forget about me"

Have you given any thought of using some shade cloth/fabric? They would
give some respite from the sun while still allowing plenty of light through.
