While not at all the same situation, one of my sons lives in Brazil
and his wife is Brazilian but speaks excellent English. They adopted
a child and he is now over two years old and he speaks both English
and Portuguese as he lives in a bi-lingual household.

My son had to learn Portuguese but Oliver should be able to
function as a native speaker of both languages. At least that is
what his parents are aiming at -- kids' books, etc. in both
languages. Learning now to say the alphabet in both.
