I've been taught since I was a child to NEVER speak disrespectfully to
a policeman.
That's because you're white, and your black peers were taught the same thing
for entirely different reasons.
However, times do change and what happened fifty years ago doesn't amount to
a leaky sack of *** now. Those who don't change with the times soon get
left far behind, and that cop is one of them. He did his job and instead of
just thanking the homeowner and walking away, he allowed it to escalate into
something that ended up only making him look stupid. What did he arrest the
guy for....disturbing the peace? Whose peace? An uninvited guest who
should have just walked away and let him have the last word or yell. His
neighbor's peace? Did any of them file a complaint about the noise coming
out of their neighbor's yard? You know that that never happened.
....It's mostly common sense, but it's also a part of
civility that Gates obviously finds alien to him.
Coming from you, complaining about incivility is uproariously funny.
Besides, incivility is not an arrestable offense in any jurisdictions that I
know about. It may be boorish, but it ain't no crime.
