Our ER (all over the state) are overwhemed with illegal immigrants. They
bring the whole extended family with them for care, and, unfortunately,
many of them do need something. We can't just turn them away, so the
waiting time gets ridiculous. We often have a delivering mom who brings
all the kids to be checked over while she in labor. If the kids are sick,
we can't let them stay around--they bring a lot of infections with them--
they are treated, and sent home. It is a multifaceted problem that isn't
going away anytime soon. They cost a fortune in social services for
health, housing, and schools. That is something our social workers have
to deal with, and it takes them away from their regular caseloads.
Doesn't the reality of this situation stem from the fact that most of our
nation's employers were willing to make employment by such illegals
attractive to them, thereby encouraging them to immigrate to this country
(illegally if necessary) so that they could get those jobs to support their
families.....jobs that were not available to them in their home countries?
If society sits there and does nothing about it, don't we have a moral
obligation to sustain those immigrants and should it not be at society's
expense? What most of us critics are all too willing to ignore is that
every head of lettuce that we bought for 49 cents would have cost us 89
cents had those immigrants not been there to pick them for us.
American businessmen at lots of levels profited from the presence of those
immigrants and society tolerated that in silence. It really should come as
no shock when the inevitable bill for those hidden expenses are presented
for payment.
If there's any other way of coping with the problem while keeping it within
the context of how Americans view themselves, I have yet to see it, but I'm
surely willing to look at alternatives that might be possible within that
same context.
