actually gave a sort of jump and jiggle. Later in the news I learned
there had been a quake.

La Jolla is just a hop, skp and jump up the coast from where
I live.



When I lived in California we had a small place on a main road. Suddenly
it felt as though a huge truck went by, and there was a thump and the
glassware jiggled in the kitchen cabinets. I later found out that was an
earthquake, but a little one. I never experienced an earthquake here in
the northeast, but they do occasionally have them.



There's a lot of variety. Usually there's a gradually increasing
shaking, and you wonder if it's going to die down or get worse.
The most unusual one for me felt as though a giant hand had
suddenly slammed against the side of the house, just once, no
aftershock.

In the big earthquake of 1989, one of my friends was on
Dolores Street when it happened. He could see a long way
down the street, and he said the street was rolling like waves
on the ocean.

In a smaller one before that, it was a very hot day
("earthquake weather") and I was looking at button pins
displayed in the window of a store. Then the window and
everything behind it started swimming like an amoeba. I
thought I was getting heatstroke from the hot weather, until I
looked away from the window and saw all the lightposts
swaying, and all the people around watching them sway.
