Billy Mays Dead At 50
MITCH STACY | June 28, 2009 02:44 PM EST | AP
TAMPA, Fla. — Billy Mays, the burly, bearded television pitchman<snip>
whose boisterous hawking of products such as Orange Glo and
OxiClean madehim a pop-culture icon, has died. He was 50.
Somehow I managed to miss him. He looks completely unfamiliar.
I've never seen a real Shamwow commercial either, though I loved
the dubbed one that was posted in this newsgroup. I zone out on
commercials though - I usually telepath my most recent findings
about Earth to the head Klingon while they're playing.

:^) Really did laugh out loud.
I've been waiting for years for anyone to admit that
millions of us have had decades of training in how to reject or ignore
overly enthusiastic 'messages' accompanied by loud voices, loud music,
or aggressive graphics.
"It is difficult to get a man to understand something when
his job depends on not understanding it." - Upton Sinclair.
I listen to TV using an infrared head set. I've owned it for about
10 years. It is very light weight, with ear buds - I can walk around
with it, no wires.
My hearing is bad and this allows me to keep the TV sound
turned down to very low level and use a dial on the set to bring
sound up so I can hear it without sound so loud it might bother
A quick twist of the dial turns the sound off so that is very
handy during commercials.

What a good idea. My youngest is buying a condo and I'll suggest
it to her. I guess there's no point in asking the brand name,
*nothing* made ten years ago is made to the same specs or even by the
same company.
*************************
Also, I prerecord many programs. Let's say there is an
interesting news segment. I'll turn on the record function
on the VCR and go do something for 10 or 15 minutes and
then play the program as it is still recording which gives me
the option of fast forwarding through any commercials.
*************************
Or, "How to made an ad man cry".
Making the most of the new technolgies I pay for in my cable
subscription.

Sure, but I bet you had to read the manual. :^)
