The OS/driver problem is now solved. Turns out the driver I'd
downloaded for XP worked with 2000 Pro. However, my struggles were
apparently in vain anyway because the scanner, which lights up and
makes the same noises it did when it worked, refuses to accept a
slide, negative strip, or photo and is therefore useless.
Option 2: Buy a cheap 20Gb-40Gb hard drive somewhere (maybe eBay) and
install it in your computer as a second hard drive. You will probably
be able to reformat your new drive using Seagate Disc Wizard. Then
load Windows 98 on it.
I know that's a viable option, but I try to avoid doing anything
inside the computer other than blowing the dust out of it every couple
of years. I nearly had heart failure installing a couple of NICs a
few years ago, so sure was I that I'd break something vital by
mistake. Typical of the things I get into, that got complicated
because I'd bought two exactly alike and it confused the hell out of
the computer, so I had to go back and buy another one of a different
brand to get it to work.
Option 3: Separate your current hard drive into 2 partitions and load
Windows 98 up on the second partition. One freeware software program
that will create 2 partitions for you on your hard drive is EASEUS
Partition Master . I've never used it, but I understand it will do
that for you.
Option 4: If you have no use for your Windows 2000 computer, then I
would simply reformat the hard drive on that computer and reload
Windows 98 on it. Once you do that there's a good chance your computer
will never be of any use to you again, except for using the slide
scanner.
I think that computer is on its way to the dump. It was just waiting
for someone to get around to destroying its hard drive first. It's so
old and slow that no one would want it. A friend tried to install a
wireless card in it when he put Windows 2000 on it and never could get
it to work. It only has two USB ports, and I don't think they're even
USB2. I had the driver for the scanner on a flash drive which I
plugged into one of the USB ports, and the scanner into the other one.
When I plugged in the scanner, I got a warning message from Windows
that I'd unplugged the flash drive without asking first. I hadn't
unplugged or even moved it.

For the average user, it is best to never reformat and install another
operating system. Chances are the computer will never run right again.
