get 98 on instead.

In case you're wondering why anyone would want to do this, it's
because I have a slide scanner which I haven't used in at least five
years and recently found more slides that need scanning.  The damned
scanner (an H-P PhotoSmart S20) has software which doesn't like XP,
Vista, or 2000 Pro.   I was using 98 when I used the scanner last, so
I'm assuming that it will work on this old computer if I can just get
98 back on.

I downloaded 70 MB worth of alleged software upgrades from H-P, but
halfway through the installation, got a message that if I continued,
something truly terrible might happen immediately or somewhere further
down the line.  H-P is no help.  They don't accept e-mail and don't
have a toll-free number.

If anyone is interested in the really long version of this saga, it
all started when I discovered Movie Maker on my laptop.  I have not
been worth a plug nickel since.  I have a lot of photos, some home
video, and a DVD recorder with which I can capture TV.  Movie Maker is
the kind of program which just fascinates me and, predictably, it's
led to all sorts of detours like figuring out which type of file, avi
or wmv, of which there are several variations, will look better on the
computer and on TV.  I had to buy one program, to convert the files
the DVD recorder makes into something Movie Maker can use, but it also
has several other interesting possibilities, like being able to
extract the audio from a TV recording and turn it into an mp3.

While googling for related information, I came across references to XP
and realized I had Movie Maker on this computer all this time.  I
could have been having all this fun for years already!

I had more home video I wanted to put on DVDs, having only done a
small part of it a while back.  So I got out the 8 mm recorder/player
and found that I had left a tape in it and of course the heads are
screwed now and nothing will play.  I thought OK, I still have the
camcorder.  I knew the batteries would be useless by now since it
hasn't been used in about fifteen years, but I thought the thing that
plugs in the wall would work.  It doesn't.  After these
disappointments, I am not betting heavily that the slide scanner will
work even if I give it an OS it likes.

Has anyone else discovered the joys of Movie Maker?

Here's a link to download software and drivers for your scanner. Looks
like XP or 2000 should not be a problem. As for the error message you
got, I think (ahem) we can be sure it didn't say "something truly
terrible" was about to happen.

I usually do a screen capture and save error messages I haven't run
into before, but I guess I was so startled by this one I just exited
in a hurry without doing it this time. I don't recall the exact
wording, but it was dire and mentioned both now and later.

It said something, of that I have no
doubt, but what you need to do is download the software and drivers
for Windows 2000, follow the instructions, and start over. If there is
some horrific error message, take a deep breath, write down what it
says, and then see if you can understand what it's talking about. It
may just be some generic lawyerese warning that if you install their
stuff and your computer explodes bringing about the end of
civilization as we know it -- they aren't responsible. If that's all
it is, just go ahead and do the install.

I planned to do that if I ran into the same message installing it on
the old computer, but this is currently my main computer and I'm sure
I'd find that there was something vital I hadn't backed up if I wiped
out my hard drive.
