House set to send FDA tobacco bill to Obama
By JIM ABRAMS

WASHINGTON (AP) - After more than a decade of efforts by smoking
opponents, Congress prepared to take a final vote Friday on
legislation giving the government far-reaching powers to regulate
tobacco and limit tobacco industry marketing and sales practices that
lure young people into smoking habits.

The House was expected to give overwhelming approval to legislation
that for the first time gives the Food and Drug Administration
authority to ban tobacco ingredients deemed dangerous to health,
prohibit use of candied and flavored cigarettes popular among young
people and prohibit use of words such as "mild" or "light" that give
the impression that the brand is safer.

Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., a leader in anti-smoking campaigns, said
the bill was "truly historic and puts us one small step away from
finally acting to address the tobacco epidemic in our country."

The Senate passed the bill on Thursday, and House approval would send
it to President Barack Obama, who supports it.

Most business regulations are the result of businesses abusing the
freedom we gave them and I don't think the cigarette manufacturers are
any exception. From what I understand, they used to mix in extra
chemicals in the tobacco to make it more addictive.

If you buy a can of soup, the ingredients are on the can, but do you
think the cigarette companies ever told the public what kind of crap
they were putting in the tobacco? Nope, they didn't.

Coca Cola has cocaine in it, when it first hit the market.

That's a good example of what corporations will put in your food or
drinks if they are unregulated.

As for
cigarettes, that is a phony argument. When I was in high school everyone
in
high school knew that smoking cigarettes was a bad thing to do, and that
was
in the early 1950's. Anyone who does not know that cigarettes are bad for
you dotay, had to be living in a cave.

There are a lot of things that are bad for you. For instance, everyone
also knows that sugar is bad, but that doesn't give sugar
manufacturers a license to put other crap in it and not tell you about
it.

Given a choice between knowing what's in a product and not knowing,
most people would prefer to know.

I have little problem when government forces companies to tell us what is in
the product, I have a whole lot of problems when government tries to prevent
me from doing what I want to do.  I value freedom too much.

Go ahead and do what you want to do. Nobody is stopping you. If you
want to buy a soft drink with cocaine in it, though, you're out of
luck. If you want to legalize drugs, incidentally, there are probably
more Democrats in favor of doing that than Republicans.
