I bought three LED bulbs in Sam's club for way cheaper than that last
week! They are low wattage in output, but even lower in what they use.
I have a Sam's membership but haven't seen (never looked for LEDs
really)
LEDs in the Holland Sam's Club store. The next time there I will try
and
find some.
El Castor: I was hoping that you would, generously, try to win me over
to
the Bright Side by buying me several LED bulbs. A dozen or two would do
nicely :-)

Jim they came packaged together in a combination card and plastic thing.
It was tough trying to get them out!
I just visited the Sam's Club web site, and saw nothing comparable to
the C Crane 60 Watt LED replacement bulbs. All I saw were odd shaped
things that put out lumens equivalent to 30 watt (or much less)
incandescent. They would be of no use to me, even if they fit in a
normal incandescent socket -- which I doubt they do. Wherever we have
lights that do not require dimming, we have replaced incandescents
with CFLs which cost under two bucks apiece. The room I am in now is
lit with a fluorescent torchiere that has a built-in dimmer which
doesn't work real well, but is good enough for this application. Other
dimming CFLs which I have tried have been a waste of money. CFLs use
more power than LEDs, but are still much less hungry than
incandescents, and frankly, given the choice of a $1.50 CFL or a $100
LED, I'll have to stick with the CFLs. If you know of a bargain priced
LED that will replace a 60 - 100 watt incandescent, please share. I'm
in the market. (-8
Those 30 watt LED's you saw and I just bought, do indeed fit into a regular
socket. They also say not to put them into an enclosed lamp, just like the
CFL's do. (Not sure if they can go in a dimmer or not
sort of mini trac-lighting thingy, but I don't, and few do.
, and we threw outI have no use for a 30 Watt bulb. I have been waiting for a decently
the packaging. I will have to double check that next time I go into
Sam's). I used one of the bulbs in a fixture that is not really used for
serious illumination, but more of a decorative lamp. The glass bulbs are
clear, not frosted....and it is not so good for the fact that the little
clear bars with the points of light within are so bright you will see spots
for a few minutes if you even glance towards it for a second. I don't know
what they will be good for. I think they might be good if you had a night
light you kept on somewhere. It will be tricky. Not enclosed, but they
certainly do need some kind of a shade.
priced LED bulb, but I am sorry to say that day has not come.
A 60 watt equivalent CFL uses 13 watts (a savings of 47 watts over
incandescent), and it costs the same as incandescent. A LED of the
same output costs $50 and uses 7 watts -- a savings of 6 watts over
CFL. Not what I would call cost effective.
LEDs, at least at this stage in their evolution, do not dim. (Neither
do CFLs -- they (CFLs) claim they do in so some cases, but to be
polite, that's an exaggeration.) I like lights that dim, and it's not
something I'm going to give up for some applications.
Lastly, LEDs larger than a 60 watt equivalent can't take the heat, and
may actually need a built-in fan!
I'll wait for the kinks to get ironed out -- which may never happen
because there are other technologies under development -- like plasma.
I'll take your word for it. The three bulbs I bought in Sam's will go in small night light lamps I keep around here. They are really quite dim, but when you look at the spots in the center, it is almost too bright. They definitely need some improvement.
