I am very busy this weekend, with only time to read one or two postings,
since I have our much loved stepson here for the weekend. We are headed to
a super bowl party later on too. So lots of cooking, real-life goings on,
chatter, and loving connections with friends, family and all that good
stuff. Too good to spend very much time here.
But I did want to say this.
I have found that people who listen to Fox news and Rush Limburger (p-u) are
all of the mindset that they and only they know the real truth and that
there is a gigantic conspiracy, an internal war of sorts, going on between
themselves and everybody else. All other news organizations are
immediately suspect, as are all other political beliefs than their own force
fed ones. Selective news reporting which emphasizes certain things and
downplays others, even to the point of actually eliminating some things,
keeps them in that mind-controlled, cult-like, us-against-them, mode.
They are convinced that the democrats are to blame for everything because
their cult-directors tell them so. They NEVER get legitimate news and
nothing they ever read or hear is truly objective or bipartisan. I know
this because my husband was one of them for almost all our married life.
He isn't the kind of guy who would allow himself to be swayed or whom I
could or would, really talk to about this, but even he finally realized that
Bush has run the country into a ditch. I don't see him watching Fox
anymore, because he has finally realized that it is propaganda, and
that........ "the economy is strong" was just another well-trained sound
bite from the republican candidate, when it came crashing down around our
ears.
I believe that my one gently suggested challenge, that eventually changed
his mind, was the challenge to educate himself on political matters from all
sources, not just the propaganda driven ones. Together we watched every
single debate from the very first to the last one. We deliberately skipped
the commentary afterwards in most cases. He saw the difference in
direction, in where the candidates put their emphasis, their interests,
their concerns. THAT effort was what turned him and so many others away
from the GOP this time. They have only themselves to blame for the
election and for the lack of confidence of the majority.
That hasn't stopped the die hards, or the heavily indoctrinated ones. They
tune in for their daily propaganda fix, and indulge in their fantasies.
There is no reasoning with them. Rush tells them what to think, and fills
their minds with conspiracies and prejudices, and is just entertaining
enough to give them a sense of belonging to an imagined elite who are "in
the know". They can't and won't give up that because it has come to
define their sense of who they are. It is no coincidence that so many of
them are religious fundamentalists, who have been doing this all their
lives.
You would think that in the face of all this country is experiencing, some
others would be able to break free of the cult-like mindset, but
unfortunately it isn't happening much with the die hards. All the really
smart ones say that the GOP will have to re-invent itself, re-align itself
with modern, mainstream thought if they want to remain viable and keep this
country running with a two party system, and have already crossed over and
voted with their heads screwed on straight. But with so many others, so
deeply mired in propaganda, and so completely unable to hear or digest the
truth even when it bites them in the proverbial ass, ....... well......I
think that we dems will have the lead for quite some time.
I'm quite OK with that for now, but I would like the system of checks and
balances to return, and more than anything I would like to see cooperation
between both parties, a true bipartisan government come back to this
country.

Nice post, and much better organized than anything I've
posted on the topic. You're also more knowledgeable
about the opposition. I don't know anybody personally
who listens to Rush or any of those other guys like
O'Reilly. I can only think of one person who I know is
even a Republican, but I've only shot pool with him a
few times and we've spent less than fifteen minutes
total in conversation. He's gay, so he's probably not a
typical Republican.
Rush is so transparent and so manipulative that I really
don't see how people can avoid noticing. I see a lot of
chop-logic in this newsgroup too though, so I guess such
things mostly just slide by.
Hi Rumple,
People believe what they want to believe. They listen to the various news sources that stroke their personal prejudices and predisposed beliefs. It goes against the grain to think with an open mind. All their lives they have been taught what to think, not HOW to think. They are STILL being told what to think, so when they are told by their Rush's and O'Reilly's, it sounds "right" to them.
If they ever took the time and opportunity to listen to what was really going on, it would terrify them. They respond with prejudice, rage, and bond together with like-minded pals to shut out the truth. They get together a group of soundbytes, with catch phrases and such, and repeat them mindlessly like their programmers at Fox and Co. want them to do. They mumble about big government and such, things that their icons of the past caught them up with. Yet they accuse us of spin, when they are completely in the thrall of spin themselves!
Of course, now we all can see what their brand of "small" government has accomplished. Our FDA is in ruins, the Wall street foxes ran away with the henhouse and they laugh at us while awarding our money as bonuses after we bailed them out, and while our children are losing their jobs, their ability to pay for college, to support their families. Our reputation is mud everywhere. We are near the third world in infant mortality. Our soldiers are coming home wounded and physically and emotionally exhausted from being through tour after tour of duty with no relief in sight. Foreclosures and layoffs everywhere. If you ask me their brand of government has proven iteself to be an utter failure and we are the laughingstock of the world. We are STILL embroiled in two wars started by an idiot and endorsed without question by the republican contingent for all this time.
But I can guarantee you that no matter what Obama does, and with the best minds in the country at his side, they will still criticize all efforts to fix the mess, and will not change their position.
