That's what I've always done and usually I'm able to solve the
problem, but not always. It does require a certain amount of practice
in knowing how to phrase the search words and tenacity to try
different phrases in your search.

Just the other day, for example, I was building a computer for a
friend and ran into this weird problem with Microsoft Office 2007.
Everything about the computer seemed to be working fine, but MS Word
would load very sloooow. When you clicked on the program it would take
7 to 15 seconds for the program to come up.

What the hell could possibly cause that!? As it turns out Word 2007
goes out on your home network and tries to initialize the printer.
That has to be one of the dumber things Microsoft has done. They
either ought to wait to initialize the printer when the user wants to
print something. Or, they ought to initialize the printer after word
has been loaded and isn't busy.

I uninstalled Microft Word.
So Microsoft produced an update that included an update of Microft
Office.  Since I don't have any of those programs the update kept
repeating over and over every few days.  It finally stopped, and I
don't know why.

I don't do enough word processing to warrant a bloated program and
use instead Edit Pad Lite.  It pops right up when I want to use it
for copying text from the web and saving it.  And has enough features
to use it for writing a letter, etc.

I try not to use any Microsoft programs other than the OS if I can
help it.  I use a spread*** program from Open Office which is free
software and not intrusive.

The "Atlantis Word Processor",http://www.atlantiswordprocessor.com/en/
is a MS Word clone without all the baggage. I've used it for several
years and am completely satisfied. It generates and reads ( .doc )
files, prints envelopes and does everything Word does more efficiently
as it doesn't have all the MS junk attached. It has a free trial and
isn't that expensive for a first class word processor.

This has been a public service announcement!

Any advice on a good alternative way to read Adobe pdf files.  I am
finding many documents I want to easily clip pictures and text from
and pull into Family Tree Maker 2009.  I don't want to buy the Adobe
suite and only use Reader.  That thing is way overpriced and I seldom
need it.

As an experiment, I just downloaded the PDF at:
http://www.fema.gov/pdf/library/pfd_all.pdf

I didn't have any problem copying and pasting both text and pictures
from that file to a Word Document. Once you get it into a word
document, you can presumably do anything you want with it.
