I remain sort of purposefully ignorant of MP3's and Ipods and how they all
work, but I realize I can't remain that way for much longer. I have a
serious list of new toys I would like, but I don't think Santa is going to
drop an Ipod, a GPS unit, or a bigscreen TV down the chimney for me this
year. During 2008 we got a new washer and dryer and a fireplace insert
already, and there are some fixits for the house that are on the list, way
ahead of new toys, so I guess I will have to wait a little longer to get up
to speed with modern musical media. One of the biggest drawbacks, in my
opinion, is that with an ipod one needs a lot of peripherals to enjoy it,
and the sound is not as good as traditional media.

I had a small mp3 player, a percursor to the IPOD. It didn't hold
a lot of music and I was unable to find the correct battery to replace
and beyond that it just wasn't very good in other ways.

But I loved having a small portable player to use with ear buds
because my hearing is so bad I have to keep a stereo turned up to
loudly to hear well that it would greatly annoy my neighbors.

So I am going to buy an IPOD, and begin again to download music
to store on it. They are so tiny and one can walk around the house
with the IPOD in a pocket and hear music all day. And the sound
quality is said to be very good.

I have to decide how much I want to pay -- the more storage capacity
the higher the price.

I'll probably subscribe to some music downloading service -- which one
I need to do some research into. I think it would be well worth it
for the pleasure I would get from it.

If anyone here owns an IPOD or uses a music downloading service I'd
really like to hear from them.

What peripherals are you saying one needs to enjoy an IPOD? If one
is going to use it purely in a portable mode and not in connection
with a stereo?

Rita, if I were to get one, I would want to have a portable boom box to be able to play it through that. Or at least some thing that would allow it to be played through an existing boom box. I would also want to be able to plug it in somehow to my car radio. My car has a really good stereo in it, and that would be worthwhile. Right now I have a ten cd magazine in the trunk, which gives me some flexibility, but an ipod would be even better. Then of course you need a charger and the earbuds and a carry case, and by the time you start with all those little goodies you have a pricey package. I know myself. I would want ALL the goodies. For you it might be just the earbuds and you'd be fine. I know someone who started out, ended up buying a special turntable to convert ALL his old records into MP3's and has them all on his computer and in his ipod.

Damn,...... now I am getting the itch to go and get one! :-) ;-)

Yes, I can see you would want that flexibility but I just want the
tiny portable device. You have lots of music I wager on CDs and such
you could convert to mp3s and not need to buy any mp3s. It is easy
to do the conversion on your computer. You can download free programs
that work very well. Here is one I used in the past:

http://www.help2go.com/Tutorials/MP3_Audio/CDex_:_A_Tutorial_for_Turning_CDs_into_MP3s_and_more.html

I don't own many CDs or DVDs and I lost the large music collection of
mp3s when I moved cross country. I archived some of it on CDs. but
hardly all -- I had 30 gigabytes of music stored on that computer.

So one can pay .99c a song from ITunes or subscribe to Napster and
download all you want at $12.95 a month but Napster is not compatible
with IPOD so one would need to buy a portable player that is.

So I would have to make some investment for sure to get a variety of
music I like to listen to.

I don't know if one can borrow CDs or DVDs from the library and use them to convert the music to mp3 form or if that is somehow
made impossible.

Anyway I look at it there is a lot I don't know. And reading about
it all on the web becomes confusing.

I think my best bet is to talk to someone who owns an IPOD. Or
another top rated portable mp3 player.

How freakin' timely is THIS ?
My oldest brought me an Ipod last night. Walked over in the snow even.
She also included the player - cleverly design to look like a Bose.
To make it even sweeter, she had pre-loaded over 800 of 'our ' favorite
tunes......................by genre.
She had made a disk of what was loaded so I could set up my own
library on the computer, which we did straight away.
Looks like I'll be spending a LOT of time picking must haves from the
CD collection to add to the bunch already there.
Since I've never owned on, I anticipate a learning curve, but as usual,
Apple has made it a pretty straight forward process.

I surely do appreciate the instructional url just now.
