Sex invariably spells trouble, says Dalai Lama

The Dalai Lama, the exiled Tibetan spiritual and
temporal leader, on Friday said sex spelt fleeting satisfaction and
trouble later, while chastity offered a better life and "more
freedom."

"Sexual pressure, sexual desire, actually I think is short period
satisfaction and often, that leads to more complication," the Dalai
Lama told reporters in a Lagos hotel, speaking in English without a
translator.

He said conjugal life caused "too much ups and downs.

"Naturally as a human being ... some kind of desire for sex comes, but
then you use human intelligence to make comprehension that those
couples always full of trouble. And in some cases there is suicide,
murder cases," the Dalai Lama said.

He said the "consolation" in celibacy is that although "we miss
something, but at the same time, compare whole life, it's better, more
independence, more freedom."

Considered a Buddhist Master exempt from the religion's wheel of death
and reincarnation, the Dalai Lama waxed eloquent on the Buddhist credo
of non-attachment.

"Too much attachment towards your children, towards your partner," was
"one of the obstacle or hindrance of peace of mind," he said.

Interesting.  How would the human race continue if one followed his
advice?

You need to consider who he was speaking to.   Remember also that he is a
celibate monk, and was probably speaking to other monks.  Being a monk
requires some serious committment.    My branch of buddhism allows Lamas to
marry, we also have lady Lamas as well.   He never speaks "ex cathedra" like
a Pope would do.   There is no shortage of marrying or procreating
buddhists.   Of this I assure you! :-)

Does your religion believe that all that is spoken by a monk like this
is wise quidence? A somewhat devine way to structure your life?

Charlie

I ignore monks generally. Have to consider who he was talking to and
it is not you and me. Wisdom being the essential issue for every
Buddhist, such comes from within and not others. I use an approach of
considering some fundamental issue for focus, reflection and wisdom.
The words monks offer for such focus are very useful.

But, not as guidance or interpretation of dusty books. Wisdom can't
come from seeking some list of rules such as 10 commandments or
quotations from 'wise' people. These can become barriers to our own
searching. Like someone who spends time and space acquiring lots of
good books but never reads them, snappy quotations or answers from
others are not wisdom. More often, they are simply searches for that
which we already want to hear. imho, it is incredibly unnatural for
humans to find sex troublesome. Rather like saying, breathing or
eating is unnatural.

Further, for me, the challenges some monk may face or of little
concern to me. He is a political as well as spiritual figure and has
to address many audiences.
