Well, er, I happen to believe in reincarnantion. So is it odd
that I would think of a new, young dog -- that takes up at the Obama
house -- as "Granny" ?
I do believe that. Often our loved ones incarnate near us in forms we
may
not recognize, but only that there is some special love between you.
It's the only concept of another life that makes any sense to me.
But that leaves me wondering by what mechanism it is achieved ? When
attempting to answer that -- I'm forced to wonder if it requires a
supreme being or intelligence.
In other words is the soul free to wander or is it directed ? So may
questions and so few answers.
Karma, which is the law of cause and effect. Attraction and aversion.
We
incarnate because we are drawn to this and want to avoid that. It
doesn't
need a supreme being. It is energy, passing from this state to that.
Like a candle. If you have a candle and you light another candle from
it,
is it the same flame? The being who passes from life has energy. That
energy seeks to go where it is drawn and to avoid that which it dislikes.
Westerners have been taught about a supreme being for all their lives, it
is
very difficult to grasp that the universe is energy, and we are energy and
that no big daddy in the sky is necessary. Our bad deeds and actions
have
energy of one kind and our good deeds have another kind of energy.
Reincarnation makes a lot of sense, much more sense than the idea of one
lifetime and then either heaven or hell. When you look around you at
living beings, you notice that all are not created equal. For the one
lifetime model to be true, it would be necessary for all to be equal.
Some
have advantages and others have disadvantages. Buddhists call this
karma,
and say it works from one lifetime to another, and another, etc.
My biggest problem with the spirit moving from one live to another is
the fact that there are now 6 billion people on Earth. Look back a
few hundred years ago and there were only a billion. Do spirits
reproduce ?
On a summer night go outside and for the sake of discussion take one square
foot of space and think how many living beings there are in that tiny space.
Living beings are limitless as far as we can see. Not all are fortunate
enough to be born as human beings, but there are billions and billions of
living beings. All those living beings want to be happy, and to avoid
suffering.
Not all of them have brains. Plants? Prions?
Bacteria? Amoebas? What about the individual
cells in your body? Every one is a living being.
You're a "colony", in which millions, maybe
billions, of cells are sacrificed daily for the sake
of the integrity of the colony, with Nazi efficiency.
That's not to speak of the beings who live in
your intestines and are not part of your body at
all, but without whom you could not digest your
food. Against them you frequently commit
casual collateral genocide when you take
antibiotics.
Life feeds on life. In this world it can be no
other way. Even green plants have chemical
strategies for eliminating the competition.
Humans may not be able to fit that into a
comprehensive system of compassion, but
nature doesn't care about that, doesn't care
at all.
