I'm not so sure the Republicans have committed political
suicide. Whatever the wisdom of bailing out or not bailing
out Wall Street, public sentiment seems very much against
doing so. The Republicans have landed on the "populist"
side of the momentary controversy, even if one maintains
(as I do) that the fiscal policies of debt advocated primarily
by the Republican party were responsible for the whole
national collapse including, but not limited to, Wall Street.

I guess it all depends on what happens next.

But they aren't against a bailout really. They are just trying to
have the "private sector" make money on it which is much more unlikely
if the government comes up with the money.

As far as I'm concerned, it would be far better if the private
sector would bail them out than that our taxes should do it.
Then it will be a plus for them so they'll sell things I want and
will buy, or it will be a bust for them and I won't buy from
them and they'll go bankrupt. Either way, I don't have to pay
for the bailout. I can't imagine the private sector paying 700
billion for something of very questionable value. I don't
know who the Republicans suggesting that have in mind.
