I just got my new PC and this message is an excuse for testing. One
problem, no audio, so I'll fool around a little more, then consult the
trouble shooting guide and maybe end up buying speakers. When I first
powered up, the performance was dismal, but after shuting down all the
update programs, I'm satisfied. Configuration is two 320 GB drives
mirrored (raid 1), 3 ghz dual processors, 3 gbytes memory and blu-ray rw
(target sells 25 GB BD-RE for nineteen dollars. I have some extra pieces
provided by HP that I'll have to find a use for, maybe something for the
audio, huh.
I don't know why you don't have sound, but I had that problem
and it turned out to be due to new versions of Windows Media
Player taking control of the sound in an odd way (accursèd
Microsoft). It stopped my music notation program from being
able to play midi files. The fix for that was to "run" a program
named "Sndvol32.exe" that's part of the Windows operating
system, as discussed at:

Thanks folks, my problem turned out to be really stupid. After discovering
that there are no internal speakers (no internal modem either but the HP rep
caught that when I had trouble with my credit card validation number) I
bought the cheapest walmart external powered set and followed the skimpy and
scattered instructions. Still no sound. I got my neighbor to check it out
and still no sound. Finally I reseated the computer's audio out plug and
guess what, sound at last. The reason I say dumb is at the same time I
found the problem, I discovered that the OS detects plug insertion and
guides me through the install process.
What update programs did you shut down? I have an HP and believe me
when I say they don't slow it down -- unless maybe you're dialup, and
even then they don't make it run slower -- you would just spend a lot
of time connected. I assume you're running Vista, and you DO need
those updates. The HP updates happen only now and then, but the ones
from Microsoft are ESSENTIAL. I mean, no kidding, you really need
them, and unless you're religious about doing manual updates, it's
much better to have automatic updates turned on.
