George Z. - - I rarely agree with you - but must admit that, on the
topic of Ms. Palin, for Vice-President, I totally agree with you.
She
is
a heartbeat away from the actual Presidency -especially since we
might
have an elderly, vulnerable President - and she has NO experience
in
foreign policy or national security. I am afraid McCain has dug his
own
"grave."
yup - just watch Biden try making minced meat out of her come October
2. It has every aspect of being as brutal - and as entertaining - as
the Bentsen-Quayle debate on October 5, 1988.
http://www.debates.org/pages/trans88c.html
I don't think Biden will be brutal or he will be accused of picking
on a woman. That should not make any difference --- but it will.
If he can do it deftly, all to the good. But it is tricky.
Biden will tear her apart, the same way Kerry did to Bush. Palin will
reply with one-liners and canned statements that really don't address
Biden's comments. Her lack of experience will be telling in this
debate.
Biden doesn't have to be the 'attack dog' that Obama wants in this
case.
He can be polite and if he is just mildly condescending and sarcastic,
he'll make all his points, and I think he can do that easily. Although
Palin is intelligent, unlike Bush, who is stupid, and very likely, she
can think a lot better on her feet, but unfortunately, she can only
think
about what you know and understand, and Biden has that part all over
her.
I suspect that Obama will also use all his demagogic powers to pretty
much destroy McCain as well.
I wonder if the McCain campaign will allow Palin to go on the Sunday
talks shows solo -- Meet the Press, Face the Nation, etc. If she does
she will have to be ready for specific questions on foreign policy,
etc. Perhaps the campaign will try to shield her by allowing her to
appear only with another GOP heavy to help out. I hope the networks
don't allow that. Tim Russert is no longer with us, but Tom Brokaw
has been pretty tough in segments I've seen.
She probably will go on whatever the campaign deems is in the campaign's
interest. The Democrats are no different. I see Obama and Biden wasted
no time going on 60 Minutes. And at this juncture, they need it quite
badly. And by the time she gets air time, she'll be thoroughly prepped
and educated. After all, while a neophyte, she is relatively
intelligent,
unlike Bush, who needed and relied on his handlers to do all his
thinking
for him.
My personal take is that in the coming weeks we all - each and every one
of
us - will get to see exactly how quick a study Palin is...or is not. And
I
would much like to see her under as much fire and pressure as can be
thrown
at her. Kind of trial by fire. Make or break. Let's see if she can not
only take the heat in the kitchen but make something delectable...or not.
And if she does crash and burn, then - by golly - McCain does have a wee
problem, does he not? But if she doesn't, then it will prove to be yet
another installment in a most interesting presidential campaign year.
My guess is that the McCain campaign will keep her well protected. And
let surrogates, women, like Fiorina and others, do the talking for
her with the media. The one theater where she will have to stand
alone is the vice presidential debate. It will be interesting to see
if she can be kept well shielded from the press for two months.
Now I would be disappointed indeed if she were so protected. Throw her to
the lions, I say, and see what kind of mettle she has. Sink or swim. Do or
die. Do or be done with. Whatever she does and however she fares, it will
be most interesting indeed...and perhaps - just perhaps - even a little fun
than the Bensten-Quayle debate. But - big but - if she does manage to hold
her own and keep her head above water, the last 3 or 4 weeks of the campaign
will be interesting indeed. What a heck of a presidential campaign this
2008 race is!
I will be watching to see if Palin is allowed to campaign on her own
and not under the sheltering wing of Daddy McCain. If she takes
questions from the press on whatever they throw at her -- and you
know reporters love to throw curve balls at candidates.
One thought...should McCain falter, one wonders what Palin will do.
Ferraro, as I recall, simply faded from the national scene after Mondale
failed. Wonder if Palin will do the same.
If McCain falters the Republican party will want nothing to do with
anyone who was close to McCain.
I agree this presidential race is something to behold. I was thinking
about it last night and I began giggling at the injection of the new
theme of the frontier as the real America. Animal pelts as the
appropriate home decor, mooseburgers as the menu du jour.
I would guess that Palin would be talking to all those evangelical
organizations that mistrust McCain, and womens organizations that are
still pissed about Obama's treatment of Clinton. It wouldn't hurt that
she address the NRA since they aren't so sure about McCain either. I
suspect that she will pull the Republican base together and put a
scare of liberals into them. She just has to be herself. They'll love
her. I think that she will also do better than Biden in a debate
against him. The Obama campaign might be advised not to let the VPs
debate. IIRC didn't Karl Rove help in her choosing? He's a pretty
tough strategist.
Just how did Obama treat Clinton that they are so upset about? Be
specific.
Thumper
Obama needs to address some issues that came up during the campaign--
such as the shoddy treatment of the press of Clinton, and the label of
racist that the Black community has put on Bill. Perhaps you are not
aware that throughout the campaign Clinton has been harassed by the
press. This is the kind of glass ceiling that many women know and
appreciate, and would be reassuring if Obama said something about the
unfair way that the press treated her during the primary campaign.
Perhaps he like you is unaware of this issue? I don't see how. IIRC he
has been talking to many Clinton supporters to get their support, and
he has probably been informed of this in spades. Ignoring the problem
is something that he has chosen to do, and this kind of treatment just
builds resentment even if the Clintons are trying to support Obama's
candidacy. There's even some pundits who say that a joint press
statement of their mutual regard for each other just smacks of the
opposite. If Obama doesn't come to back up the Clintons at this point,
then he is not promoting party unity. I suspect that he is worried
about his own popularity if sticks his neck out in this way. Critics
of the Clintons will start to pile onto him... Is it any wonder that
he avoided a logical choice of Clinton for his VP?
