I saw one quick blurb on TV that she was head of the Alaska Oil and
Gas Conservation. I like that. It's hard to find a Republican
who is also a conservationist. But when you do find one -- you've
really got something. Ala Teddy Roosevelt.

Gary, you are so gullible! You might want to check out what this organization actually does.

Here is their mission statement:

The Commission oversees oil and gas drilling, development and production, reservoir depletion and metering operations on all lands subject to the state's police powers.

The Commission acts to prevent waste, protect correlative rights, improve ultimate recovery and protect underground freshwater. It administers the Underground Injection Control (UIC) program for enhanced oil recovery and underground disposal of oil field waste in Alaska. It serves as an adjudicatory forum for resolving certain oil and gas disputes between owners, including the state. The Commission carries forth statutory mandates consistent with the protection of health, safety and the environment. It strives for cooperation with industry, while maintaining well-defined and essential regulatory requirements.

Not exactly your typical "conservation" organization!

No, that is not what I think of when I think of conservation.

Let's just hope she is not as bad as some.

That is exactly why the Republicans have latched onto her. That is exactly why she was elected governor of Alaska.

Check it out. The staunchly Republican and very conservative state of Alaska had achieved such a reputation for corruption that the voters, even in this red state, were threatening to go Democratic. Palin had had a rather unremarkable career as Councilman and then Mayor of a small Alaskan town. She made an unsuccessful bid to be lieutenant governor in a 5 way Republican primary race in 2002 which was already highlighting the problems in the Republican party. Frank Murkowski, then governor, gave her a consolation prize of Ethics Commissioner of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (the one you thought was actually about conservation) She quit the commission when her complaints about the performance of the members of the commission were ignored and then fingered a Republican party chief Randy Ruedrich, a fellow commissioner, for malfeasance. This lady gets even! Not exactly difficult given the degree of corruption in the Commission. One wonders why, even after gaining the governorship that she has not acted on her other complaints about the Commission.

Based on this single accomplishment, she campaigned on a reform platform and surprisingly beat Murkowski in a five-way race in the primary. The Republicans had found someone who could save the party in Alaska!!! In a strongly Republican state, she managed to also beat the Democratic candidate, Tony Knowles in a three-way race. Some say that it was because he strongly opposed capital punishment. Oh, yea, there was also this accusation, not proved, that Knowles was the recipient of some illegal contributions. Evidently the lady can also play hardball.

So, based on one whistle blowing incident, Palin recognized the political wind in Alaska and parlayed it into the governorship. Basically, she won because her name was not Murkowski.

Now, McCain would evidently like some of that slick move to rub off on him. If she salvaged the Republican party in Alaska, perhaps he thinks that she can do the same thing for him!

So now, the media is obligingly repeating the half truths and out-and-out lies in the Campaign's press releases about Palin. It shows how desperate the Republicans are.
