record of his past activities makes me very nervous, and ought to be

Olly, as an afterthought to my first post, I never said he wasn't qualified. I simply said he hadn't EARNED the right to seek the office because he hadn't paid his dues, and lacked, IMHO, that necessary respect from those he would have to do business with. If you want to interpret that as my saying he's unqualified, I won't argue with you. But as far as qualifications are concerned, the only qualifications I know of are the ones specified in the Constitution. And those are that the president be a native born citizen of the age of 35 years or more.
Now, if you want to add that the nature of the job requires that one be a good administrator, organizer, have good verbal and written skills, exert leadership qualities, be a good advocate for our country in foreign diplomacy and such, that is your opinion, much of which I share. But as far as qualifications go, he's qualified.
He may not be a desirable choice because he lacks experience in areas that the job demands, but that's what campaigns are for.
