As for this Vietnam Veteran, I can only hope that, for those of you

The public school system, the history books and the media give a
distorted view of the nobility of mankind. They focus on a few great
individuals while ignoring the fact that 99.99% of humanity has no
sense of justice and no conscious. They will readily treat veterans as
though they were disposable merchandise just as quickly as they will
cheer the shock-and-awe bombing of innocent civilians in Bagdad as
though it were a TV video game.
I could easily argue the point, but if your mind is already made up,
there's
not much point in bothering.

I'm listening and I do like to think that I'm objective.
Do you reach into your wallet and give away $50 or $100 to complete
strangers? Loads of Americans do exactly that........no paperwork, no IOUs,
they just give it away. That's exactly what happens almost every time a
natural disaster occurs in or outside of the country. We are by and large a
good-hearted, giving, generous and caring people and are not the complete
shits that the current administration has made us out to be in the eyes of
the world these days. Indeed, I'm almost tempted to say that we are
(perhaps only because, blessed as we are with what we have in our country,
we can be) amongst the more noble people on the face of the earth.
I think more than half of the people in the country fill that bill and I
resent being included in the other group.

I personally do give quite a bit and my wife and I always gave to the
wounded veterans. The 99.99% figure is obviously an exaggeration. When
people act singly as individuals, they often demonstrate a caring
nature. When they act anonymously in groups, they often act like
Barbarians. The various countries of the world generally give a very
small amount, relative to GDP, to charity. Denmark probably gives the
most at approximately 1% of GDP. The US is somewhere around 0.1% and
much of that is probably tied to our self interest or requires buying
American products or services.
George W. Bush holds the record for highest approval rating of any
modern president at 95%. His approval rating during the invasion of
Iraq, after he forced the UN inspectors out, was somewhere around 75%.
Bush's father reached a peak of 89% just after the Gulf War, and after
the slaughter on the highway of death and dropping about more
explosive power on Iraq than we dropped on Japan during WWII.
One of the things about human nature that I found fascinating during
my commuting days is that you can take a normally, caring, loving
young women and give her anonymity by putting her behind the wheel of
a car and watch her dart in and out of traffic at 20 mph over the
speed limit and tailgate a motorcycle at about 20 feet, for instance.
