The role of humanity will still be: to turn the computers on -to make
them work - and turn them off.!!!....:-)
Sorry to be so simplistic - but there is an ounce of truth in it - so
don't worry. Look at the positive side - take a look at what Stephen
Hawkins does with his computer-like machine he has invented.
And - just think what we all could do TO the Muslims with such a
computer!!!!

Olly, assuming we refrain from blowing ourselves up, it's a certainty
that in 35 - 50 years, research in artificial intelligence will
produce a computer that equals or exceeds the intelligence of a human
being. That may seem incredible, but it's not, it's inevitable. Such
a computer would be better at improving it's own design than any
human. In another 100 years or 200 years what would it be capable of?
As we speak, Honda has developed a robot capable of climbing stairs,
assisting invalids, listening to simultaneous instructions from three
people, and judging a rock-scissors-paper contest.

Take that smarter than human brain and stick it in a robot body 100 -
200 years more advanced than the current Asimo, and what have you got?
A slave that's smarter, stronger, and faster than it's human master.
What purpose would there be in being human? The robots will be able to
design themselves, build themselves, and repair themselves. They will,
after all, be smarter than we are. They would be able to do anything a
human could do, and better. Even if we created an obedient race of
slaves, there is still a problem. Today's school kids can't do long
division and square roots -- they have a pocket calculator to do it
for them. In that not too distant future, what purpose would humanity
have? Is an uneducated oaf sitting on a beach drinking Margaritas
serving a purpose?

It's a bit more complicated than that, but I hope you can see that the
future may require more of us than just flipping a switch. Off hand I
can think of a good book on this subject, The Singularity Is Near, by
Ray Kurzweil, as well as two movies, I Robot, and Artificial
Intelligence: AI. AI was directed by Steven Spielberg and was the more
serious of the two. It presented a very bleak picture of a future in
which humanity is replaced by creatures which we designed.http://www.amazon.com/Artificial-Intelligence-AI-Region-2/dp/B000060K...

It may also be that we evolve ourselves towards robots. IIRC I thought
that the singularity stuff had ourselves putting our consciousness
into robots and living forever.
